Course Description:Since the first civilizations, the arts have been used to manipulate people’s perceptions of their leaders, the social hierarchy, and even their own existences. This course will present a variety of examples from earliest times to contemporary events. Through visual analysis and discussions of artworks, we will determine what messages were being conveyed, what imagery was used, and if they were effective. In the process, we will grapple both with Orwell's notion that “All art is propaganda” and whether or not, in this age of disinformation, art can still be considered one the most powerful forms of propaganda. |
