Course Description:

Arundhati Roy’s novels depict class, caste, ethnicity, and religion in late twentieth century and contemporary India. Exclusion and inclusion are the ever-wavering tensions that weave through her books. We will read Arundhati Roy’s two novels, "The God of Small Things" (1997), which won the Booker Prize, and her new book, "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness" (2017). The novels were written twenty years apart which allows us to witness the growth of a literary imagination as well as the growth of Indian society.
