Course Description:

In 1845, English sailor Jack Swan built a wooden tavern, adding a one-story adobe boarding house two years later. This unassuming dwelling would soon achieve notoriety as California’s first theatre. State Parks historian Michael Green describes the theatre’s long history and metamorphosis through war with Mexico, military-led theatrical performances, the Gold Rush and its use as a commercial whaling station. Long closed for renovation and vexed by myriad structural misfortunes, the building is poised for a triumphant return. The course will include a site visit and walking tour.
