[CLOSED - 9/20/17 STATUS] Steinbeck: Settings for the Stories

Course Description:

The lush landscapes of the Carmel, Salinas and San Antonio Valleys, the rugged coastline of Big Sur and the bustling communities of the Monterey Peninsula informed the ideas and set the stage for the California novels of Nobel Prize-winning writer John Steinbeck. According to Steinbeck's biographer Jackson Benson, "Scene and setting assume a for heavier burden of meaning in his work than in the fiction of most other novelists." This class offers a virtual tour of scenes that inspired Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, and other works to show how Steinbeck combined imagination and landscape to create great literature.
