Course Description:

The Japanese writer, Kenzaburo Oe, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1994. His fiction explores the dignity of human beings as they wade through their own self-deceptions. He pursues a level of emotional pain in his work that some readers find difficult to read; however, redemption, selflove, grace and respect for the life we’re given on this planet exist at the other end of an Oe text. The structures of Oe novels are not linear and his sentences are jarring because he's not interested in beauty as much as the dissonant truths of our lives.

In this course, we'll read the full-length novel, "Rouse Up O Young Men of the New Age!" (1983) and a set of four novellas combined in the text, "Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness"(1994).
