Course Description:

Turkey's storied history has few equals in the modern world. From its position at the center of the powerful Ottoman Empire, to its successful struggle to become a Republic, to its recent political upheaval, Turkey has continued to evolve with surprising twists and turns along the way.

Noted Turkish scholar Dr. Jerry Leach will reveal Turkey's fascinating past, examine its tumultuous present under controversial President Erdogan, and give us a glimpse into an uncertain future muddied by the game-changing April Referendum.

Facilitator:

Jerry Leach, PhD received an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley and a doctorate in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University. Most recently, he was a Professor and Director at American University in Cairo. Dr. Leach has held high level positions within the State Department, the National Security Council and the Peace Corps. An accomplished speaker and guide, he has led five tour groups to Turkey. He served as the National President of the World Affairs Councils of America from 1996-2006.
