Course Description:

In this writing course, we'll take inspiration from the great German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. We’ll begin with an examination of Rilke’s life and his writing, beginning with his most famous work, Letters to a Young Poet. We’ll then turn our attention to Rilke's New Poems, that he referred to as his "thing poems"—about a panther in the zoo, a Venetian morning, a lute. For our last session, we'll explore some of Rilke's profound early poems from The Book of Hours. Each session will include time for writing and at-home writing assignments will be given as well. Please read Letters to a Young Poet prior to the first session (available free online or in print).
