Course Description:

Joel and Ethan Coen are celebrated for their unexpected twists on cinematic genres and historical events featuring outrageous characters with off-beat regional accents and dubious work ethics. Many of their earlier movies focused on twisted, injury prone, identity-muddled capers in which characters are frequently mistaken for one another. Later films often eschewed perverse comic ingredients in favor of melancholy character studies and examinations of human cruelty.

In this course, we will take an in-depth film studies look at six of their films which reflect the Coen view of the antihero or “loser” at the forefront of the action: "Raising Arizona" (1987), "Miller’s Crossing" (1990), "Barton Fink" (1991), "The Man Who Wasn’t There" (2001), "A Serious Man" (2009) and "Inside Llewyn Davis" (2013).
