Course Description:

Ekphrasis, from the Greek, means “description.” Ekphrastic poems vividly describe works of visual art in which the poet, through imaginative narration and reflection, amplifies and expands on the artwork’s meaning. This encounter between two related image-making art forms, fine art and poetry, will be the focus of our course. In a seminar setting, we will look at reproductions of the artworks that have inspired poets such as W.H. Auden, Vicki Hearne, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rosanna Warren, and others to paint their impressions with words. Copies of the poems will be provided. Recommended reading includes Art and Artists (Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets published by Alfred A. Knopf).
