Course Description:

A new translation of Lorca’s poetry has recently been published, inspiring this offering. We will read this and previous translations, noting the differences and deepening our appreciation of his work. Deeply moved by the gypsy singers of Cante Jondo, Lorca wrote poems influenced by this music, by a quality present in their songs called duende—the dark aspect of the soul, that mysterious essence subtly evident in much of the world’s finest art. We’ll study the poet who risked his young life for his art and was murdered by Franco’s henchmen for who he was. Taking inspiration from Lorca’s poetry, we will write our own.
