Course Description:

Whether taken for the first time or as a refresher, this celebrated offering will explore in depth how Japanese religion, art and culture have profoundly influenced the West.

Sept. 12: The Soul of Japan
The origins, iconography, philosophy and aesthetics of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Shinto and Bushido.

Sept. 19: Japonisme Fever
The seduction and revolution that followed the introduction of Japanese art and aesthetics to the West, including its influence on Western artists, musicians and writers.

Sept. 26: Architecture to Zen
From Frank Lloyd Wright to Star Wars, how Japan has shaped Western architecture, photography, decorative arts, pop culture and spirituality.

Melinda Coffey Armstead, pianist and Japanophile, has been Music Director at Church in the Forest, Pebble Beach, since 1995. She has performed around the globe as a recitalist and chamber musician and has released three solo CDs: Season of Dreams, Beyond Words and Christmas Reflections.
