Course Description:

Jazz can often be a mysterious aural experience, one that requires careful listening and a guiding hand to understand the concepts that make this art form so compelling. In this course, we will listen to the music of some of the most significant jazz musicians of the past seventy years such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and others, while examining their varied approaches to the art of improvisation.

Biff Smith has spent his life teaching music and playing jazz piano. He recently retired after 40 years as an instructor at Stevenson School but continues to teach at the Berklee College of Music. He is one of the founding members of the Monterey-based jazz quintet, Along Came Betty, which has made six recordings and is a fixture at the Monterey Jazz
