Course Description:

There’s no better way to understand and appreciate the culturally diverse nature of American society than through the lens of immigrants who’ve established a new home here. In this regard, the perspective of Asian Americans is both revealing and fascinating. Join us for this four-part course examining the Asian American experience through literature and film.

Aug. 27: "No-No Boy," a novel by John Okada, explores life as a Japanese-American immediately following WWII.

Sept. 24: "M. Butterfly," a play by David Henry Hwang, illuminates the Chinese American experience.

Oct. 29: "Gran Torino," a film by Clint Eastwood, was the first to feature Hmong Americans.

Nov. 5: "A Voice in Every Wind," by Qun Wang, relates the experience of Chinese exchange students in the U.S.

Please note:

1. Participants should read "No-No Boy" for the first class. It's available from Amazon. Paperback version is $19.95.

2. The play is also available on Amazon.

3. We'll show Gran Torino at OLLI before the third class for those unable to stream the video.

4. Dr. Wang will have copies of a "A Voice in Every Wind" available in class at a discounted rate ($15/per).
