Course Description:

Back by popular request—this offering has been updated to include the most recent scientific findings.

Oct. 11: Your Brain on Drugs
A non-technical look at what happens in your brain when you use drugs. We'll look at uppers, downers and hallucinogens, with a special focus on pain relief.

Oct. 18: Your Brain and Dementia
An introduction to brain scans and the newest thinking about what occurs in the brain when dementia or Alzheimer's disease strikes, including suggestions on how to avoid these diseases, and some new avenues that may lead to cures.

Oct. 25: Your Brain on Music
An examination of how the brain reacts when you listen to and perform music. We'll delve into the mathematics, sensory activity and biochemistry of the brain when stimulated by music—classical, country, jazz and rock and roll!

Chris Hasegawa, PhD retired as Dean of Extended Education and International Programs at Cal State Monterey Bay. Prior to that position, he taught at the University of Oregon, CSU Sacramento and CSUMB.
