Course Description:

With countless awards and box office records firmly in its grasp, Hamilton breathes rarefied air as one of the most decorated and popular musicals ever produced. Longtime Bay Area actor and director Walter M. Mayes discusses this Pulitzer Prize-winning sensation and its place in the pantheon of musicals that portray the history of America. By examining the antecedents that inspired this groundbreaking work, both from the language of hip-hop and the musical theatre,
we can truly appreciate the Hamilton phenomenon.

Facilitator:

Walter M. Mayes has spent the last two decades sharing his lifelong passions for theatre and literature. As an actor and director, he has worked with numerous theatre companies including South Bay Musical Theatre, City Lights, Palo Alto Players and Broadway by the Bay. A gifted author and storyteller, Walter has published two books, performed on spoken word and musical recordings, and is the first recipient of the Coleen Salley Storytelling Award.
