Course Description:

Gauguin’s life was a spiritual and literal journey, traversing various theologies as well as the world’s oceans. In their forceful use of color and pattern, his paintings reflect a simultaneous fascination with the primitive and the modern. Born in the mid-nineteenth century, Gauguin was influenced by the innovations of the Impressionists and by his close friendships with such contemporaries as Cezanne and Van Gogh. However, his work also drew on the energy and mysticism he experienced in French Polynesia, and his “primitive” style was to influence Matisse and Picasso, among many others. (Note: "Gauguin: A Spiritual Journey" will be on display at the DeYoung Museum from Nov. 17 – April 7.)
