Course Description:

Rohingya Muslims, a minority group in Southeast Asia's Myanmar, have endured systematic violence from Myanmar's military and its Buddhist majority population, including forced migration, rape and murder. The BBC has, in fact, named them the most persecuted people in Asia, if not the world. Dr. Heather Gregg will provide an intimate look at the tensions of the Rohingya with the wider Buddhist population, the emergence of a Buddhist monk calling for their extermination, and the government’s complicity in the violence. The lecture will also consider how this conflict could become grounds for insurgency, and even the flash point for a new region of jihad.
