Course Description:

Memoir is “the first-person voice at its best” notes Philip Gerard in "Creative Nonfiction", “a credible voice of witness speaking to us with warmth, humor, and wisdom, free of bitterness of self-pity, inviting us to share an important confidence.” In this course, the memoirs we will read do all of that and more. "This Boy’s Life" (1989) by Tobias Wolff and "The Liars’ Club" (1995) by Mary Karr are both classics that helped usher in a surge of memoirs published in the last decade of the twentieth century. We’ll also look at three compelling essays by Wallace Stegner, Anne Fadiman and E.B. White.
