Course Description:

This course will focus on Toni Morrison's second and third novels: "Sula" and "Song of Solomon." The novels ask us to consider the relationship between past and present in the development of each of its characters.

The experimental structures of each work support the idea that the present and past are intricately tied together. Sula can't escape her past and Milkman, the main character of "Song of Solomon," wants to ignore his. The literary structures develop a sense of time that moves forward and backward, complicating any easy sense of the present.
