Who's Really in the Bottle?: Genies East and West

Course Description:

From Barbara Eden’s portrayal of a genie in 60's television to Robin Williams’s blue genie in Aladdin, Western depictions of genies tend to be subservient, funny and slightly irreverent. While they can be mischievous, they are largely harmless figures in American popular culture. In Arab lore, however, djinn are far more complex characters who can be quite dangerous and who often get the better of their “masters.” This presentation traces the origins of the djinn character in Arab lore through its transformation into a jovial sprite in Western culture through examples from literature and popular culture.
