Course Description:

To call something a “winter’s tale” was Jacobian (post-Elizabethan) slang for something fanciful, something unreal—a fireside story. The “fanciful” descriptive is a bit misleading, implying light fare, a comedy perhaps. This tale is as dark as they come. A ruler’s rage-fueled descent into unfounded jealousy, a child cast out into the wild, a marble statue that comes to life—some say "The Winter’s Tale" has it all. In this “late” period tragedy, Shakespeare is at the height of his powers, giving us a powerful story wrought from dark themes and offering some of his best prose and verse.
