CSUMB — Celebrating 25 Years!

It was the spring of 1994. The Cold War was over. The military was boarding up buildings and pulling troops out of Fort Ord. It took vision and perseverance to transform the Army base into Cal State Monterey Bay, an academic community that now helps to shape the culture and economy of the region.

The "21st campus for the 21st century," as President Bill Clinton called it at the dedication ceremony, has developed into a vibrant institution of innovation, service and athletic excellence that provides resources, opportunities and leadership to surrounding communities.

This school year, CSUMB is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Join us for two of many events planned to mark this extraordinary milestone.

CSUMB: A Plan for Sustainable Growth
Tuesday, Oct. 8; 10:00 – 11:00am

The university's master plan has created the foundation for smart, sustainable growth as it looks to the future. Learn about the development of the physical plant, which incorporates newly constructed buildings along with renovated former Army structures. Find out how it met the challenges of demolishing dozens of dilapitated Army buildings; what projects are on the drawing board; how the campus is using water in smart ways; and, what it is doing to limit the impact of traffic.

Katie LaPlace is Associate Director of Construction, Campus Planning and Development at CSUMB, where she has managed major capital projects — including demolition. Matthew McCluney is Senior Campus Planner. Since joining the campus in 2016, he has worked on the campus master plan update, including its environmental review.
