1741: Goldberg Variations | Livestream Zoom + Recorded

Course Description:

Melinda Coffey Armstead leads a guided tour of the "Goldberg Variations" of J.S. Bach using the geocentric cosmology of Ptolemy (earth is the center of the universe) with readings of poems by Robinson Jeffers and William Butler Yeats as guides on a poetical journey through the cosmos. In his 1986 article, Bach scholar David Humphreys claims that the unifying device of the work is an allegorical scheme of ascent through the nine spheres of Ptolemaic cosmology.
