Course Description:

Monterey was the first European capital of Alta California, and the Spanish Royal Presidio of Monterey is one of the most historic sites in California. Despite its significance, the history and archaeology of the Presidio have largely been forgotten, overshadowed by other 18th and 19th century California Spanish colonial mission and presidio sites.

This course will examine the exploration and eventual founding of Monterey, the archaeology, build out and decline of the Presidio proper, and the changing identities of soldiers and settlers of Monterey.
