Course Description:We often hear about monarch butterflies, but there are 90 other species of these colorful flying insects in the local area. Chris Tenney will tell us about the ones we are likely to see along urban streets, in parks and in gardens. He’ll also touch on a couple of rare and endangered species. With insect numbers in decline around the world, Chris will discuss the arduous efforts of local biologists to annually count butterflies sat four locations in Monterey County. |

Chris Tenney is a retired teacher and amateur naturalist. After co-authoring "Birds of Monterey County," his passion shifted to butterflies. He began an inventory of Monterey County butterflies in 2005 and, in 2023, he and his co-author Jan Austin published "Butterflies of Monterey County." In 2015, he completed a "big year," where he chased butterflies across the United States, spotting more than 500 species.
