Course Description:

This course complements the Fall 2019 course, "Ireland – Poetry, Rebellion, Romance," which concluded with the 1916 Easter Rising and Ireland’s almost freedom from British occupation. But what has happened in the 100 years since? The Catholic Church and Ireland were mired in a very conservative and exclusionist world view until recently, when the Irish embraced a progressive and inclusive way of life. Join us as we examine this game-changing shift, using noir themes to deepen our understanding. Beyond lecture, discussion and videos, we'll examine films about the church-dominated 1950s (Benjamin Black’s "Quirke") and the scandal-rich 2000s (Ken Bruen’s "Jack Taylor").
