Course Description:

The opioid crisis that has devastated America over the past decade is only the most recent proof of the permanence of addiction, and American cinema has long reflected the reality of persistent substance use problems. In this course we will view and discuss four films that provide different representations of addiction, its effect on those involved in substance use, and on others in their lives. The films we will view and discuss are "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995), "Half Nelson" (2006), "Am"y (2015), and "Beautiful Boy" (2018).
