Course Description:Why do humans collect? What do we collect, and how do we go about it? And what are some of the logistical and ethical challenges to collecting? Let’s talk about the things we gather, from bottle caps to ceramic frogs to Depression glass to fine art. We’ll dive deep into theory (provenance?) and practice (the hunt?) during our first session at Ryan Ranch. Our next meeting will take us to the Monterey Museum of Art to enjoy the "Monterey Collects" exhibition of outstanding California art from private homes. In our final session, we’ll explore the basement of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History where we’ll revel in its century of amassing fossils, feathers and fantastic artifacts. |
