Course Description:

Join us as we access the stories of Louisiana and Mississippi residents who couldn't evacuate before Hurricane Katrina for numerous cultural, social and economic reasons. As we read and discuss "Salvage the Bones" (Jesmyn Ward), "Zeitoun" (Dave Eggers), and view "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (Benh Zeitlin), we'll also discover untold government rescue efforts that punished, terrorized and damaged survivors in ways no Category 5 hurricane ever could. "Salvage" won the National Book Award in 2011; "Zeitoun" won the Caméra d'Or Prize at Cannes in 2012 along with the Sundance Grand Jury Prize the same year.
