Diaries of Hayes Perkins

Course Description:

Hayes Perkins, creator of Pacific Grove's extraordinary springtime "Magic Carpet" of florescent pink succulent blooms, was also an unlikely diarist and world-wide adventurer. Perkins documented his travels that included eight years in Africa and 130 ocean voyages in a diary that fills 2,000 type-written pages. His writing offers a unique "working-man's" perspective on war, life, politics, and racial and social inequality in the early 20th century. Join us as we review extracts of this work as well as a collection of letters reflecting on his travels written shorting before his death.
