Course Description:

Still a creative force at age 90, Edna O’Brien is considered the "doyenne" of modern Irish literature. In this revealing offering, we'll explore O’Brien’s work by discussing Irish history in relation to a woman’s place within it. We will concentrate on Irish literature and society from the 1950s through the present, never forgetting that 2021 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of what became the Republic of Ireland. The evolution of Edna O’Brien’s life and literary reputation are essential to this discussion. There will be short stories and poems to read, videos and interviews to explore, and, of course, many questions to be answered.
