Course Description:

Erma Bombeck made America laugh, and sometimes cry. One of the nation's most widely published columnists and best-selling authors, she was loved by millions of readers. Columns were taped on refrigerators and mailed to kids at college. We will focus on Erma's life as a writer, wife and mother, and campaigner for women's equality, plus her impact on, and her place in, American humor and journalism. We'll also look at her standing as it has evolved over the years within the 20th-century world of wits such as Russell Baker, Dave Barry, Art Buchwald, Nora Ephron, Ellen Goodman, and Molly Ivins.
