Course Description:

Each of the years 1939, 1946, 1955, and 1974 produced an extraordinary number of revered films. From "Gone with the Wind" to "Notorious", "Rebel Without a Cause" to "Chinatown", the cinematic excellence from these years may be unsurpassed. Film historian Gary Shapiro looks at these special years and, using curated film clips and insightful analysis, details the growth of the motion picture as an art form in the 20th century.

Facilitator:

Gary Shapiro has been an educator for 30 years and teaches Film Appreciation and Broadcast History at Monterey Peninsula College. A broadcaster for over four decades, he is the longtime host of "From the Bookshelf," a radio program featuring interviews with authors and celebrities.
