Course Description:

This book is fiction, but Hector Tobar is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who knows this territory well. The novel's setting is Los Angeles and Orange County; its Latinx characters expose Southern California artifice by crossing the boundaries and borders of class, country and language. Race-related scandals that threaten SoCal's entangled weave of social and ethnic rules of engagement lurk in the shadows. Tobar's 2011 masterpiece, "The Barbarian Nurseries," explores this terrain with a Pulitzer-sized sense of truth, and although it's now 2021, the novel still speaks poignantly about the vast differences, yet undisputed connectedness, among all California's peoples.
