Course Description:

Viruses are disarmingly small and simple, highly infectious and frequently lethal. Although they have evolved to infect nearly all life forms, they are not even considered living. Additionally, they frequently mutate into novel emergent forms. Our primary natural defense is our immune system which is made up of components that are instructed to fight each infection. Unfortunately, it must "learn" how to deal with each new infection. Vaccines are our only ancillary defense but need to be targeted to specific viral attributes. For complicated reasons, typical antibiotics are ineffectual. Viruses are as old as life itself and will always be with us.
