Course Description:

Zadie Smith's third novel, "On Beauty" (2005), is a 21st century, multi-cultural and Americanized update of E.M. Forster's "Howards End." Filled with literary and cultural references, the novel satirizes academia and life as situated in a fictional Boston suburb. In "On Beauty," relationships fall, comedy reigns, culture divides, beauty sags, and race confuses, all while humans continue to want to connect. Throughout our reading, Smith pushes us to rise above the fray and embrace an idealistic view of humanity regardless of its ongoing failings.
