Inside a U.S. Embassy: How the Foreign Service Works | MPC

Course Description:

Career Foreign Service officer, Ambassador David Lyon will use his 32 years with the Department of State to explain how America selects, trains and deploys its diplomats. His experiences in Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific, and domestic positions in African Affairs, counter-narcotics and the National War College gave him abundant insight into how the State Department functions and the challenges its officers face. He'll also explain the unique way U.S. ambassadors are chosen, what is expected of them, and their powers and limitations within their countries of assignment.

Offered in collaboration with our friends at The Gentrain Society, all lectures will be held in Lecture Forum 103 at Monterey Peninsula College from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Facilitator:

Ambassador David Lyon joined the Foreign Service in 1974, serving in eight overseas countries and three domestic assignments, retiring as Ambassador to Fiji and four other Pacific Island countries. He then worked part-time for 10 years with the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and U.S. Forces Korea. He received Superior Honor Awards for his work in the Philippines and China as well as the Thomas Jefferson Award for Outstanding Service to American Citizens Overseas.
