Course Description:

With the joy of experiencing the masterpieces comes a deeper connection with the artists–and often with ourselves and how we see our world. Each session will focus on a theme and how it was expressed by several different artists. First we'll look at "The Passions of Painters," from religion and war to social equality and ecology. Then we'll span the globe to visit an "International House of Painters," focusing on artists from countries we haven't spent much time on. Finally, we'll come home to examine the "Masterpiece Motherlode in California Museums," from old friends such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh, to new artists like Gainsborough, Modigliani and Bonnard. The emphasis won't be on historical and technical facts, but rather on what we SEE in the work itself.
