Course Description:

Robinson and Una Jeffers’ home on Carmel Point became a magnet for the literary, musical and artistic luminaries of the 1920s through the 1940s. The list of distinguished visitors who came for tea, many staying to sing or play Una’s 1904 Steinway grand piano, includes Ansel Adams, Charlie Chaplin, George and Ira Gershwin, Samuel Barber, Arturo Toscanini, and many more. Stories of the Jefferses and their guests will be brought to life with performances of their repertoire (Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, and Barber) played by professional classical pianist Melinda Coffey Armstead (assisted by her husband Robert Armstead, bass-baritone). Historical photos of Tor House, Robin and Una, and the famous celebrities who came to Carmel to meet them will enrich this lecture recital.
