Course Description:

Aug. 27: Junípero Serra and the Road to Sainthood
This critical consideration of the life and times of Junípero Serra accompanies Dr. Rubén Mendoza's first-hand account of the events surrounding Fray Serra's canonization in 2015.

Sept. 3: San Carlos Borroméo and Serra's Legacy
A comprehensive review of findings from the archaeology, liturgical arts and ecclesiatical architecture of Monterey Bay's two mission structures. The many artistic, cultural, scientific, and civic-ceremonial contributions attributable to Fray Serra will also be discussed.

Sept. 10: The Liturgy of Light
A fascinating consideration of the solar geometries, and ethno-astronomy, that continue to inspire research into the blending of science and religion in early California and the West—research that has provided an illuminating glimpse into both Amerindian and Franciscan cosmologies and beliefs.
