Course Description:As we know, societies in both the East and the West have been patriarchal for centuries. Opportunities for women to rise to prominence have been limited and usually discouraged. In spite of these societal ceilings, some women have broken through and changed history. What obstacles have they overcome? How have they done it? Are there similarities among their paths? What lessons can we derive from their successes? In this offering, we will look at ceiling-breaking women in government, human rights, science, religion and more, including Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc, Lucrezia Borgia, Catherine the Great, Harriet Tubman, Mata Hari, Hedy Lamarr, and Margaret Thatcher. |
