Course Description:

The films of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar have gained worldwide interest and developed a cult following. His body of work in feature films from 1980 to present day encompasses the genres of drama and melodrama, black, romantic and tragicomedy, and farce. He employs a cadre of actors and creative personnel, and his films embody complex narratives, pop culture, popular songs, irreverent humor, sexuality, vivid colors, and glossy décor. The prevalent themes include desire, passion, family, and identity. His unique style has been recognized by critics and he is hailed as an auteur.

In this film studies course, through lecture, viewing and post-screening discussion, we will look into Almodóvar’s film career, observing his use of color as character, in films such as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (1988), "All About My Mother" (1999), Volver (2006), "Broken Embraces" (2009), "Julieta" (2016), and "Pain and Glory" (2019).
