Course Description:

Contemporary Chinese literature merges politics, fantasy, changing identities, as well as depictions of China’s rising position in the world. Literary styles, portraying the swiftly changing country, range from exploring a collective consciousness point of view in Can Xue’s "Five Spice Street" (2001) to creating an afterlife more vivid than one's original life in Yu Hua’s "The Seventh Day" (2013). The often-censored and banned stories are existential and absurd; yet, they depict human beings trying to make meaning of life in their vast and incredible 21st century homeland. (We’ll read these texts in translation.)
