Course Description:

Have you ever played "Where’s Waldo", where you try to find Waldo in various crowded scenes? This is visual search, the act of scanning for a target surrounded by distractors. Join Dr. Jill Yamashita as she examines the research behind visual search, the theories that explain it, and the variables that influence it. Along the way, you’ll discover how different variables, including color, orientation, size, and shape, influence how well one is able to find the target among different distractors. You’ll also learn about the applications of visual search, including those in the field of radiology and for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). But, most importantly, you’ll finally find out why you have difficulty finding Waldo even when you are looking directly at him.
