Course Description:

Four beautifully-crafted documentaries offer a deep dive into the lives of visionaries whose commitment and contributions to their field have galvanized and shifted the cultural conversation in new directions not only during their lifetimes but for generations to come. Join us as we focus our lens on the inspiring lives of culture shapers and thought leaders in entertainment, journalism, medical science, and music.

Films include "Mae West: Dirty Blonde: (2020); "Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins" (2019); "Oliver Sacks: His Own Life" (2019); and, "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice" (2019). Participants will view each film on their own prior to the Zoom session.

Facilitator:

Karen Davis is Senior Film Programmer for the Mill Valley Film Festival. She has taught courses in world cinema and cultural studies at CSUMB, UC Santa Cruz and Vassar College. Anne Sanchez has taught women’s studies at Hartnell College. She served as president of the Monterey County Film Commission.
