Course Description:

Following the traumas of The Great War and the worldwide flu epidemic, America entered the 1920s filled with excitement, relief, optimism and some fear. So much had changed. America had mobilized to save the world for democracy and had won. Women had secured the right to vote and Prohibition was a noble experiment. How would America adjust to the new peace, new social roles, new social values? The Twenties were a time of political, economic and cultural change that brought America into the modern world. America was not simply a country of radios, movies, cars, jazz, and speakeasies. It was a nation with a Red Scare, a frightening racial divide, a diminishing farm economy, unfettered stock and land speculation, political scandals and ultimately, an economic collapse. The Roaring Twenties was a time of the good, the bad and the ugly. And we’ve never lost our fascination for it.
