Photography's First Century

Course Description:

This fascinating, illustrated lecture will explore the major artistic trends and technical advances that occurred during the 1800s—photography's first magical century. We'll begin with the birth of photography and stroll through the century viewing the work of many prominent photographers, examining how they used the medium to express their creativity with subjects as varied as landscape, still lifes and portraiture.

Facilitator:

Brian Taylor, known for his lively lectures, received an M.A. from Stanford University. He studied with Beaumont Newhall and Van Deren Coke while earning his M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico. Brian is a professor emeritus at San Jose State University where he taught photography for over 35 years and also served as the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History. He recently retired as Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art.
