Course Description:

Please Note: This course is not designed as entertainment but rather as an academically rigorous study of film and art manifesto pairings. A syllabus and assorted readings will be provided. "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" has been substituted for "Mulholland Dr."

Five timeless manifestos from 20th century art movements are brought together in this course through the modalities of literature, visual representation and cinema. The impassioned artistic statements focus on Pop Art, Surrealism, Dogme 95, Dada, and Conceptual Art, drawn from writings of artist groups as well as individual artists, performers and filmmakers. We will be introduced to the arching subject by viewing the film "Manifesto" in our first session. Then, prior to each subsequent meeting, we will read a specific art manifesto and then gather together to view and discuss a feature film relating to the manifesto.

Films include: "Manifesto" (2015), "Pierrot le Fou" (1965, Pop Art), "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" (1972, Surrealism), "The Celebration" (1998, Dogme 95), "Synedoche, New York" (2008, Dada), and "F for Fake" (1973, Conceptual Art).
