Course Description:

You are invited to travel across Russia's 11 time zones and explore the vast cultural landscape. We'll study the influence of geographic factors on the national character and mentality, and visit famous locations associated with writers, artists and composers, including literary sights of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Along the way, we'll explore geographic motifs and symbols in Russian art, literature and folklore. A cruise of the Volga River will reveal its role in Russia's cultural identity as will explorations of European Russia, the Russian North and Siberia.

Course will meet via Zoom and will NOT be recorded or available for viewing later. A Zoom link will be emailed to each participant prior to the class session.


Elena Sheygal-Placzek, Ph.D., is a retired professor of the Volgograd University, Russia. Author of the "English- Russian Dictionary of U.S. Life and Culture", she has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley as well as an OLLI lecturer there and at CSU Monterey Bay.
