Course Description:

Melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture, form, and style. You can wrap your mind around any music by recognizing these seven elements. In this course, we'll explore the history of Western music from Gregorian chant to John Cage through listening (live performances and recordings), lecture, images, and for those inclined, class participation. Recommended text: "What to Listen for in Music" by Aaron Copland.

Facilitator:

Melinda Coffey Armstead is a professional classical pianist and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the USA, Canada, England, France, Israel, and Japan. She received her Master of Music from the University of British Columbia, won first place in the National Competitive Music Festival in Toronto, and has recorded 10 solo and collaborative CDs.
